Forming part of a series on rural people residing in the low August Sander eventually became one of the partners and later the studio’s sole proprietor by 1904. In the same year, at the Paris Exposition, Sander was given the Cross of Honor and a gold medal. Boxers. Boxers is a portrait borne of humanism and good-humour. It was taken in 1929 during the Weimar years when boxing was amongst the most popular sports. It shows, on our left, Paul Röderstein, a cruiser-weight district champion, standing beside his grinning, somewhat mismatched, sparring opponent, Hein Heese.

Though it was realized as one single volume only posthumously (through the efforts of his son) his career-defining mission gave rise to the greatest portrait collection of the 20 th century. August Sander was born in Herdorf, a small rural village east of Cologne, in 1876. He was one of nine children of a peasant and miner family. August Sander did not have an artistic background. As a matter of fact, he discovered photography by accident while helping a gold mining company’s photographer carry equipment. Sander’s son, Gunter said “…looking through a camera transfixed him — and not just for that instant.” Working in the mines in 1890, Sander’s hobby was Boxers. August Sander, fotógrafo alemán nacido en Herdorf el 17 de noviembre de 1876 y fallecido el 20 de abril de 1964, es, posiblemente, uno de los fotógrafos más influentes, como ocurre en el caso de Walker Evans, de la comunidad fotográfica mundial, sobre todo en los últimos 40 años.
